Synecdoche: the fragment that represents the whole
(Vol. 2)

The title, Synecdoche, is a literary device in which the part represents the whole. In this second volume I continue and refine the ideas and imagery that I began in Volume 1 (below). The square shape of the book design is an attempt to harmonize with the square and increasingly abstract photographs. To read my artist statement, click here.

Synecdoche (Vol. 1)

Synecdoche: The part that represents the whole.
Photographs about nature and human nature;
about the tension between wilderness and civilization.

Nicaragua Album

Between 1999 and 2010 I made six trips to Nicaragua under the auspices of a non-profit organization called Bridges to Community. The mission of Bridges is to promote cross-cultural interaction through the process of living and working with local communities. Volunteers from the United States work with local people to build houses, dig wells, or create other types of infrastructure sorely needed in these communities, many of which have been devastated by hurricanes and earthquakes. Most of the images in the book are portraits of the beautiful, hard-working, and resilient Nicaraguan people.

Under Construction: An Installation at the Lynden Sculpture Garden

A photographic essay documenting an installation for the Lynden Sculpture Garden's invitational series called "Inside/Outside." My collaborator was Philip Krejcarek, professor of art at Carroll University. We installed a series of construction fences and whimsical ladder sculptures amongst the permanent collection and throughout the grounds. (Read more here.)
